UK’s Skilled Worker Visa Program: A Boon for Indians

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) collated by the UK Home Office underscores the significant presence of Indian nationals in the program. Indian professionals and students have overwhelmingly taken advantage of this program, becoming the dominant nationality across various sectors.

Indian nationals are not just leading in numbers but also in specific categories. They constituted the top nationality for cross-sector skilled work, notably in healthcare visas tailored to address staff shortages in the National Health Service (NHS). The data also reveals that Indians have been the foremost group of students acquiring visas under the Graduate post-study work route, making up a staggering 41% of the total grants.

Further insights from the Home Office analysis pinpointed that Indian nationals received one-third (33%) of the visas in the ‘Worker’ category and led in both the ‘Skilled Worker’ and ‘Skilled Worker – Health and Care’ visa categories.

The Graduate route extensions witnessed a grant of 92,951 to former students in the year ending March 2023. Indian students formed the most substantial faction here as well, accounting for 41% of the total grants.

A comparison with previous years offers a glimpse of the growing trend. Skilled worker visas for Indians surged by 63%, going from 13,390 in 2021-22 to 21,837 in 2022-23. The healthcare visa category saw an even more impressive 105% jump, soaring from 14,485 to 29,726 for Indians.

Study visas also showed a positive trend. A total of 138,532 study visas were granted to Indian students for the year ending March 2023, marking a rise of 63% from the previous year. Interestingly, the number of study visas for Indian students has catapulted around sevenfold since March 2019.

It’s noteworthy that the influx of Indian students comes ahead of a recent announcement by UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman. She indicated a policy revision which would limit student visa holders’ right to bring dependent family members, now restricting it only to those at the PhD level.
